Football Recap: Archbishop Curley Comes Up Short

If Archbishop Curley was feeling good fresh off their 41-0 takedown of St. John's Catholic Prep last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Friars took a 35-16 bruising from the Severn School Admirals on Saturday. The Friars were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Admirals apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in November of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Archbishop Curley lost, don't look at Phillip Meade. Despite the final result, he rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns on only ten carries. Meade's longest rush was for an impressive 62 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Archbishop Curley also got a significant boost from Mike Cutchember, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 98 yards.

Ty Bussard had another great game (as he tends to do), throwing for 301 yards and four TDs while picking up 10.8 yards per attempt for Severn School. Those 301 passing yards gave Bussard a new career-high. Jack Schlein helped Bussard out on the ground, picking up 114 receiving yards, while also rushing for 38 yards.

Archbishop Curley has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season. As for Severn School, the victory snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 3-4 record.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Archbishop Curley will challenge Our Lady of Mount Carmel at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Severn School, they will welcome St. Paul's at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Crusaders' defense has only allowed 14.8 points per game this season, so the Admirals' offense will have their work cut out for them.
