Even though the Central Holmes Christian Trojans scored an imposing 61 points on Thursday, the Tri-County Academy Rebels still came out on top. Tri-County Academy took their match against Central Holmes Christian 68-61. The victory was all the more spectacular given Tri-County Academy's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 228th, while Central Holmes Christian is ranked 103rd).
Tri-County Academy was led to victory by Dean Gibson and Cooper Johnson. Gibson scored 14 points, while Johnson scored 13 points along with 5 rebounds. The game was Johnson's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Walker Hilderbrand, who scored 8 points.
When it comes to explaining why Central Holmes Christian lost, one person who can't be blamed is John Hudson Word. Despite the final result, he scored 29 points. Word scored a full 47.5% of Central Holmes Christian's points, the fifth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Cayton Edwards was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with 6 rebounds.
Tri-County Academy pushed their record up to 3-6 with that win, which was their fourth straight at home. As for Central Holmes Christian, their loss dropped their record down to 7-1.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Tri-County Academy has the luxury of staying home another game and will welcome Parklane Academy at 7:30 p.m. on December 11th.
