Moose Lake/Willow River had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They put the hurt on the International Falls Broncos with a sharp 40-20 victory. That's more bragging rights for the Rebels, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.
Parker Samarzia had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 142 yards and three scores on only 15 carries, and also picked up 73 receiving yards and one touchdown. Those three rushing touchdowns gave him a new career-high. Another rusher making a difference was Micah Thompson, who rushed for 93 yards.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Moose Lake/Willow River's defense and their five sacks. That dominant display was truly a team effort as five different players picked up one apiece. Robbie Roach was another major factor on D, picking up a sack, forcing two fumbles, and making 13 total tackles in addition to snagging an interception.
Despite the loss, International Falls still got an impressive performance from Hayden Swenson, who threw for 337 yards and three TDs. A healthy portion of that aerial production (113 yards to be exact) went to Carson Crandall.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Moose Lake/Willow River will be defending their home field for the first time this season when they go up against Barnum at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for International Falls, they will welcome Ely/Northeast Range/Vermillion Country at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
