The Sierra Vista Dons are taking a road trip to take on the Azusa Aztecs at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Sierra Vista is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak.
Sierra Vista fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Baldwin Park on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Braves by a score of 6-5.
Sierra Vista saw eight different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jose Aguayo, who went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Another was Sebastian Garcia, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Azusa). Everything went their way against Duarte on Friday as they made off with a 17-0 victory. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Aztecs with their most commanding win of the season.
Zach Huizar was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three stolen bases, and three runs. He has become a key player for Azusa: the team is 4-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 2-9 otherwise. Adrian Pena also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.
Azusa was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .571. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April of 2025.
Azusa's win bumped their record up to 6-11. As for Sierra Vista, they now have a losing record of 7-8.
Wednesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Sierra Vista has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .446. However, it's not like Azusa struggles in that department as they've averaged .512. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Sierra Vista came out on top in a nail-biter against Azusa in their previous matchup back in March, sneaking past 4-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Dons since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
