Football Recap: Huge Rushing Attack Leads Weslaco East over Rivera

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Flour Bluff, Weslaco East was happy to have turned things around on Friday. Their defense stepped up to hand the Rivera Raiders a 20-0 shutout. The Wildcats have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Raiders, too.

Elias Rodriguez was his usual excellent self, rushing for 145 yards and a pair of scores.

Rodriguez was just one part of a punishing run game: Weslaco East was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 260 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rivera only rushed for 92.

Weslaco East has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 3-3 record this season. As for Rivera, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-6.

Coming up, Weslaco East will head out to take on Donna North at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Wildcats will be up against the Chiefs' rather soft defense (which has allowed 44 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Rivera, they will be playing at home against Flour Bluff at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Raiders will need to watch out since the Hornets have now posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season.
