Basketball Recap: Calexico Picks Up Ninth Consecutive Victory

Calexico extended their winning streak to nine on Friday, bumping them up to 21-5. They claimed a resounding 45-18 win over the Southwest EC Eagles. The Bulldogs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 12 contests by 21 points or more this season.

Calexico was led to victory by Evalyn Rubio and Ivanna Camarillo. Rubio posted nine points and seven rebounds, while Camarillo put up 12 points. Another player making a difference was Anabel Gonzalez, who scored six points.

As for Southwest EC, they have been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 11 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-17 record this season. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1040th, while Calexico is ranked 415th).

Loss or not, Southwest EC got some senior leadership from Alyssa Guzman and Ivanna Cota. Guzman earned six points and five steals, while Cota had seven points. Guzman is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last six games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Marlene Melero, who posted two points and eight boards.

Calexico didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 71-30 victory against Valley Center on the 17th. As for Southwest EC, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 48-20 win against Castle Park on the 19th.
