Clairemont's usually-dominant pitching crew will be looking to make up for Monday's struggle, when Mission Bay hitters got past them. The Chieftains came up short against the Buccaneers on Monday, falling 14-4. The Chieftains' defeat signaled the end of their seven-game winning streak.
For Mission Bay's part, Van Playman made a splash while hitting and pitching. He tossed seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Playman has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs, two doubles, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Vince Kasunich, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Gavin Griffiths was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three runs and one RBI.
Mission Bay kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in four consecutive contests.
Mission Bay is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-4 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Clairemont, their loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 14-6.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Clairemont has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mission Bay struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.6 strikeouts.
