Brighton has gone 9-1 against Covington recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. Brighton will head out to challenge Covington at 5:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Brighton had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 15-run drubbing they dealt Craigmont on Wednesday. Brighton never let Craigmont get on the board and left with a 15-0 win. The Cardinals haven't had any issues with the Chiefs recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Kaitlyn Chapman was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Those zero hits allowed gave her a new career-low. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-1. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had over her last 13 matchups.
In other batting news, Braeley Lopez was excellent, scoring two runs while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Braelynn Scott was another key player, scoring a run while going 1-for-1.
Brighton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .917. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Covington). They blew past Raleigh-Egypt 20-0 on Monday. The win was nothing new for the Chargers as they're now sitting on four straight.
Like Brighton, Covington also got a great game from a two-way player: Kinslee Hamm. She struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Hamm has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lyla Harrell, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three runs, and one triple. Lyv Cromwell also deserves some recognition as she launched her first home run of the season.
Covington's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 4-3. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Brighton, the victory got them back to even at 7-7-2.
Thursday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Brighton has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .468. However, it's not like Covington struggles in that department as they've averaged .500. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Brighton took their win against Covington in their previous matchup on March 1st by a conclusive 9-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Brighton since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
