For the second time in seven years, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) has the top high school sports program in the nation.
Based on the compilation of state championships and runner-up finishes for the 2018 spring sports season, American Heritage finished with a total of 2,039 points in the MaxPreps Cup standings. The Patriots, who were the inaugural MaxPreps Cup champions in 2012, won state championships in girls softball and girls tennis and had runner-up finishes in boys and girls track.
American Heritage was in the No. 5 spot after the winter sports season with La Salle Academy (Providence, R.I.) in first place. However, the Rhode Island school only won one state title in the spring and finishes in the No. 9 spot.
Meanwhile, Westminster (Atlanta) moved up 47 spots from No. 49 to No. 2 with four state titles and three runner-up finishes in the spring. Westminster, which scored 1,834 points, was the 2013 MaxPreps Cup champion.
The MaxPreps Cup is a ranking system devised to rate every high school sport state championship in the nation in order to determine the nation's best overall high school sports programs. Varying point totals are awarded to teams that win a state title, or finish in second place, based on the type of sport, the size of the state, the type of enrollment division and the number of teams participating in the enrollment division. Points are also awarded for teams that appear in national rankings for selected sports.
Baylor (Chattanooga, Tenn.) also made a big move, jumping from No. 68 in the winter to No. 3 overall. Baylor won four state titles in the spring and was a runner-up twice.
Porter-Gaud (Charleston, S.C.), a member of the South Carolina Independent Schools Association, won 11 state titles in the SCISA to finish at No. 4, while St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.) comes in at No. 5.
The school that made the biggest move during the spring was Punahou (Honolulu). Not even ranked in the top 100 following the winter season, Punahou won five state titles in the spring, had two other runner-up finishes and was ranked No. 3 in in the nation in boys volleyball. The surge allowed Punahou to finish at No. 10.
MaxPreps will also post state-by-state top 10 lists along with the spring season champion, the large, medium and small schools top 25s and the best boys and girls programs of the 2017-18 season.
