Softball Recap: Pius X Find Success

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Pius X ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-7 victory over the Wayne Blue Devils. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Thunderbolts have posted since September 28, 2024.

Adee Duggan was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Libby Preister, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Katherine Hoefener was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

Pius X kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They are 9-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Pius X's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-14. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Wayne, their defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 19-9.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Pius X will welcome Gretna at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Dragons' pitching crew has only allowed 2.6 runs per game this season, so the Thunderbolts' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Wayne, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Guardian Angels Central Catholic at 6:30 p.m.
