Marcus Kao and Brandon Ma made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Kao tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Ma struck out ten batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. At bat, Kao earned one run and two stolen bases, while Ma got on base in three of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and one run. Those four stolen bases gave Ma a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Connor Uchida, who went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, one run, and one double. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Nick Loew, who went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask South San Francisco). They never let Mission get on the board and left with a 17-0 victory on Saturday. Considering the Warriors have won 14 games by more than six runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Crystal Springs Uplands, South San Francisco also got a great game from a pair of two-way players: Emilio Oseguera. On the mound, Oseguera tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Oscar Reyes tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. At the plate, Oseguera went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Reyes got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three RBI and one run.
In other batting news, South San Francisco got a big performance out of Adam Keith, who went 2-for-4 with three runs and one RBI. Christian Wong also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
South San Francisco hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in six consecutive matches.
Crystal Springs Uplands' win was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 16-2. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.2 runs on average over those games. As for South San Francisco, their record is now 18-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Crystal Springs Uplands has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South San Francisco struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Crystal Springs Uplands suffered a grim 8-0 defeat to South San Francisco in their previous matchup back in April. Can the Gryphons avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
