If the Marshall Eagles were riding high off their 59-22 takedown of the South El Monte Eagles on Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Marshall had to suffer through a rough 55-27 loss at the hands of Bonita. While losing is never fun, Marshall can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 423rd, while Bonita is ranked 175th).
Marshall's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Destiny Ihiaso, who scored ten points along with eight rebounds and three blocks. The match was Ihiaso's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Jolynn Abilar was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Serenity Henderson continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Bonita, scoring 19 points along with seven rebounds and six steals. Those 19 points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Lexi Mercado, who scored 15 points.
Marshall's loss dropped their record down to 8-6. As for Bonita, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-3.
Marshall will finish 2023 at home by hosting Pasadena at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Pasadena is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road. Bonita and Sonora will round out the year against one another at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at. Sonora is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak.
