Kennedy had lost five straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 1-4 to make it six. They came up short against the Thornton Trojans, falling 15-3. The Commanders were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Trojans apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in October of 2015.
Aleeyah Garcia made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Izzy Villafuerte, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
As for Thornton, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 7-1-1. While they didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-12-1), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
On Thornton's side, Mya Grady was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched four innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Grady has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
In other batting news, Layla Martinez was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Another player making a difference was Sophia Ornelas, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one run.
Looking ahead, Kennedy will face off against Peak to Peak at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. As for Thornton, they have already played their next contest, a 13-1 win against Aurora Central on the 4th.
