Miami is 8-2 against St. Augustine Catholic since January of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Miami Vandals will square off against the St. Augustine Catholic Wolves at 5:30 p.m. Miami will be looking to extend their current 17-game winning streak.
Miami's offense will try to repeat the strong performance it gave on Friday, when they got past Pima's usually-dominant defense. Miami took down Pima 61-43. Given the Vandals' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked sixth, while the Roughriders are ranked 47th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Miami's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Demetria Dosela, who went 7 of 13 on her way to 17 points in addition to six rebounds and five blocks, and Tamia Pietila, who went 5 for 12 en route to 21 points and three steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Pietila has scored at least a third of Miami's points. Another player making a difference was Savannah Pietila, who posted nine points and three steals.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask St. Augustine Catholic). They claimed a resounding 77-18 win over San Miguel. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 46-5.
Miami better keep an eye on Megan Callahan. She was instrumental in St. Augustine Catholic's win, dropping a double-double on 20 points and 11 steals. Callahan is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last ten games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Carolina Georgelos, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine boards.
St. Augustine Catholic was working as a unit and finished the game with 23 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in January of 2024.
Miami pushed their record up to 21-1 with the victory, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 46.8 points. As for St. Augustine Catholic, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Miami has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 32.1 rebounds per game. However, it's not like St. Augustine Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging 34.4 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Everything came up roses for Miami against St. Augustine Catholic in their previous matchup back in January of 2022, as the team secured a 67-23 win. In that match, Miami amassed a halftime lead of 48-9, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Tuesday.
