Basketball Game Preview: Polytechnic Panthers vs. Mayfield Cubs

Polytechnic has gone 9-1 against Mayfield recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Panthers will welcome the Cubs at 5:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Polytechnic has seven straight wins, Mayfield has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the court.

Polytechnic is headed into the matchup after thoroughly thrashing Oakwood: they outscored them in every quarter. The Panthers strolled past the Owls with points to spare on Wednesday, taking the game 56-37.

Polytechnic's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Harper Doyle, who dropped a double-double with 13 points and 15 boards. With that strong performance, Doyle is now averaging an impressive 8.1 rebounds per game. Areni Ohanian was another key player, going 6-for-11 to rack up 16 points and eight boards.

Polytechnic smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 27 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, Mayfield played a tough contest on Wednesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They took a blow against Flintridge Prep, falling 58-14. The Cubs were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 37-4.

Polytechnic's victory bumped their record up to 20-5. As for Mayfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-18.

Everything came up roses for Polytechnic against Mayfield in their previous meeting on January 6th, as the squad secured a 69-8 win. In that matchup, the Panthers amassed a halftime lead of 47-5, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
