The Saugus Centurions will challenge the Valencia Vikings at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Saugus is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Saugus barely beat Canyon the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Saugus was the clear victors by a 16-4 margin over Canyon on Wednesday. The Centurions haven't had any issues with the Cowboys recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.
The team relied heavily on Matthew Carta, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and five RBI. That home run was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of James Frias, who scored three runs while going 3-for-3.
Saugus always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .618. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Valencia can bid farewell to their four-game losing streak thanks to their game on Tuesday. They never let Agoura get on the board and left with a 4-0 victory.
Dexton Otton tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only two hits over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Valencia's win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Cole DeYoung, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Saugus' victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-2. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 9.8 hits in those games compared to only 5.5 in the others. As for Valencia, their win bumped their record up to 3-5.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Wednesday. Saugus hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like Valencia struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Saugus came out on top in a nail-biter against Valencia in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, sneaking past 3-2. Will Saugus repeat their success, or does Valencia have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
