Northfield dropped down to 17-6 on Thursday, ending the team's six-game streak of wins. They lost 8-2 to the Denver North Vikings. Having soared to a lofty 13 runs in the game before, the Nighthawks couldn't push the score so high this time.
Brielle Montoya was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and six unearned) runs off 11 hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in nine consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run.
Montoya wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Claire King, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. King is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played.
As for Denver North, they are on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 16 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-4 record this season. The team dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 10.6 runs.
Like Northfield, Denver North also got a great game from a two-way player: Veronica Loera-Tafoya. On the mound, she tossed seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Loera-Tafoya was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Elina Gutierrez, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run was her first of the season. Xavia Escobedo was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs.
As of now, neither Northfield nor Denver North have any future games scheduled.
