Barrow (Utqiagvik, Alaska) has the unique distinction of being the northernmost high school in the United States. It may also hold the claim of having the most unique football field in the country.
Situated on a narrow strip of land between the Chukchi Sea and Imipuk Lake, the Whalers play on blue turf that would make Boise State proud. One sideline sits just feet away from the lake.
The football program at Barrow didn't get off the ground until 2006 but the Whalers won a state title in 2017 and made trips to the final in 2011, 2018 and 2019.
The Whalers are 2-2 this year and coming off a 46-20 win on their home field over Redington (Wasilla) – a school located 700 miles away.
