Given Moreau Catholic's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 206th, while Newark Memorial is ranked 790th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Madeline Bader was her usual excellent self, scoring 21 points along with five assists and two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Elisa Ortega, who scored 15 points along with two steals.
Newark Memorial's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sydney Scott, who scored ten points. Another player making a difference was Angelina Baca, who scored nine points.
Moreau Catholic's win was their 16th straight at home, which pushed their record up to 10-9. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.6 points per game. As for Newark Memorial, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-11.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Moreau Catholic will take on James Logan at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
