The Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders's 21-10 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They were just a bucket shy of victory on Friday and fell 50-49 to Woodbridge. While losing is never fun, Mater Dei Catholic can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 451st, while Woodbridge is ranked 210th).
Mater Dei Catholic's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Awen Carrillo, who scored eight points along with 11 rebounds and three steals. Promise Martin was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 15 points and 14 rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Mater Dei Catholic and nudges their season record down to 4-7. As for Woodbridge, the win (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 12-4.
Mater Dei Catholic will be staying on the road on Saturday to face off against Oceanside at 10:30 a.m. on December 30th. Hopefully Oceanside focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 on Friday. Woodbridge won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Santa Margarita at 4:30 p.m. on December 30th. One thing working in Santa Margarita's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three matches.
