Now that the Nebraska prep baseball season has come to a conclusion, we have decided to comb through our baseball database and display what we believe are the top 10 single-game pitching performances from this spring in the Cornhusker State.
And we were not disappointed.
Lincoln East's Rece Snyder leads off this week's Top 10 with what we believe was the top pitching performance of 2018. On April 20, Snyder blanked Omaha Gross Catholic 1-0 after tossing a seven-inning no-hitter and walking just two batters. Snyder fanned 12 Cougar swatters in the only seven-inning, 10-strikeout no-hitter reported in our database earlier this spring.
Grand Island's Javier Cruz was the only Nebraska pitcher to make this week's Top 10 twice. Cruz's one-hit shut out against Norfolk April 21 places him in the No. 3 slot, while his four-hit, 10-K performance led the Islanders to an 8-3 triumph over Columbus April 30, placing him in the No. 8 spot this week.
Easton Young of Millard West cashed in with the No. 2 individual performance by allowing one hit and striking out 12 batters in a 7-0 win over Lincoln East May 5. Omaha Skutt Catholic hurler Jackson Gordon allowed just one hit and fanned 11 batters in a 79-pitch 5-0 win over Elkhorn May 7 to land in the No. 4 slot, while Buck Leinen of Concordia/Brownell/Omaha Christian Academy rounded out the Top 5 with a 2-hit, 14-strikeout performance in a 3-0 win over Omaha Central April 4.
Shay Schanaman landed in the No. 10 spot with a seven-hit, 11-strikeout performance against Lincoln Southwest, allowing Grand Island to land three of Nebraska's Top 10 pitching performances this spring.
In order to be considered for this week's Top 10, a pitcher had to throw at least seven innings in a game and fan 10 or more batters.
