Saint Joseph has been on the road for four straight, but on Tuesday they'll finally head home. They will take on the Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary Cardinals at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Saint Joseph beat Orange 49-44. Given Saint Joseph's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 75th, while Orange is ranked 404th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Saint Joseph found their leader in underclassman Olivia Martinez, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 10 rebounds. That makes it two consecutive games in which Martinez has scored at least 25% of Saint Joseph's points. Another player making a difference was Olivia Coates, who scored 8 points.
Even though Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary has not done well against Serra recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary walked away with a 74-64 victory over Serra. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Their wins bumped Saint Joseph to 6-0-1 and Orange to 5-1.
Saint Joseph came up short against Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary when the teams last played back in February of 2022, falling 50-44. Thankfully for Saint Joseph, Khaiya Chumley (who scored 12 points along with 8 rebounds and 4 blocks) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
