Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Elias Soehren of
Oxford Hills (South Paris) is the 2022 MaxPreps Maine High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior quarterback helped the Vikings go 11-0 and capture their first Class A state championship.
In a 21-7 win over Thornton Academy in the title game, Soehren completed 15 of 26 passes for 259 yards and scored a pair of rushing touchdowns. The win avenged a loss to Thornton Academy in 2021 state final.
For the season, Soehren completed 110 of 167 passes for 1,776 yards and 24 touchdowns against just five interceptions. He added 349 yards and six touchdowns on 61 carries while also playing defense and handling punting duties.
Soehren threw for 291 yards and six touchdowns in a 55-14 win over Scarborough in the regular season finale.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released January 10.
