The Mount Miguel Matadors's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their eighth straight loss. They were beaten by Helix 76-28. Mount Miguel was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 44-20.
Despite the loss, Mount Miguel saw an underclassman step up: Jaylene Hughes scored 26 points. That was a full 92.9% of Mount Miguel's points, marking the 21st time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Helix to victory, but perhaps none more so than Valerie Marquez, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 16 rebounds. Marquez hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for six straight games. Another player making a difference was Jordyn McMillan, who scored 21 points along with nine rebounds.
Mount Miguel has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost 11 of their last 12 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-19 record this season. As for Helix, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 15-4.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mount Miguel won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Liberty Charter at 5:30 p.m. on January 24th. Liberty Charter is hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses. As for Helix, they will stay at home for another game and welcome Grossmont at 5:30 p.m. on January 26th.
