Covenant Day took care of business in their home opener on Saturday. They came out on top against the Mount Zion Christian Academy Mighty Warriors by a score of 39-26.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Covenant Day to victory, but perhaps none more so than Michael Banke, who rushed for 76 yards and two scores. Those 76 rushing yards gave Banke a new career-high. Covenant Day also got a significant boost from Sidnee Westbrook Jr., who ran away from the competition to the tune of 86 yards.
Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 13 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Thomas Barry, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Despite the loss, Mount Zion Christian Academy still got an impressive performance from Sherrad Bennard III, who rushed for 130 yards and one touchdown on only 13 carries, and also threw for 239 yards and three TDs on only 19 passes.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Covenant Day will square off against Cannon [Cannon/Concord Academy] at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Mount Zion Christian Academy, they will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Northern Durham at 7:00 p.m. on September 5.
