The Rio Mesa Spartans's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their eighth straight loss. They took a serious blow against Buena, falling 64-22. While losing is never fun, Rio Mesa can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 699th, while Buena is ranked 77th).
Buena found their leader in underclassman Karisma Lewis, who scored 23 points along with seven steals. Lewis is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Skye Thomas was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Rio Mesa dropped their record down to 4-18 with that loss, which was their seventh straight at home. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 28.6 points per game. As for Buena, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 13 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season.
Rio Mesa will head out on the road to challenge Ventura at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Ventura will be looking to extend their current nine-game winning streak. As for Buena, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Pacifica at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Pacifica is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.
