Charleroi and the Highlanders are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2019, but not for long. The Charleroi Cougars will look to defend their home court on Thursday against the McGuffey Highlanders at 7:00 p.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
On Monday, Charleroi suffered a tough 68-45 loss at the hands of the Falcons.
Despite their loss, Charleroi saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Bella Carroto, who scored 12 points, was perhaps the best of all. Another player making a difference was Ella Sypolt, who scored 12 points.
Meanwhile, McGuffey's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They fell 44-36 to Brownsville. The match was a 24-24 toss-up at halftime, but McGuffey couldn't quite close it out.
Madison Gaso put forth a good effort for the losing side as she scored 19 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. It was the first time this season that she scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Faith Ealy, who scored three points along with six steals.
Charleroi's loss dropped their record down to 9-11. As for McGuffey, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 13-6 record this season.
Charleroi came up short against the Highlanders in their previous meeting back in January, falling 65-60. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of McGuffey's Alexis Ewig, who scored 24 points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
