Trinity Christian (Cedar Hill, Texas) offensive coordinator and NFL Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders is moved to tears when telling perhaps his best player,
Maurice Washington, that he is ineligible for the third game of the 2017 season against St. Thomas Catholic (Houston).
Sanders is frustrated and saddened because Washington, a thoughtful leader on the team who lost his father earlier in life, "has done absolutely nothing wrong," he said.
Simply, it's a transfer issue. Washington, nicknamed "Cali," is from California.
On top of losing Washington, the Tigers are playing for
Dulazarus Amos, whose mother died shortly after a lopsided win over Grapevine Faith Christian.
Washington's status for the game was still up in the air until minutes before kickoff.
If that decision wasn't dicey enough, the one-point game came down to a last-second, 30-yard field goal.
"That was the best high school game I've ever been involved with," Sanders said.
"The Truth About Trinity" covers the Dallas-area private school's season-long quest for a Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) state title following a disappointing 4-6 season.
To help with the 2017 transformation, Sanders brought in a handful of former NFL players, including head coach Aveion Cason (Rams, Chiefs, Lions and Cowboys) and defensive coordinator Kevin Mathis (Cowboys, Saints and Falcons).
