Two dominant guards in Tony Montgomery and Justin Burns are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Carver Tigers and the Monroe Golden Tornadoes will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 19th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Carver knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past 15 contests -- so hopefully Monroe likes a good challenge.
Carver stacked a tenth blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Saturday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Thomasville 72-39 at home. Given Carver's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 46th, while Thomasville is ranked 370th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Montgomery was his usual excellent self, scoring 18 points along with five assists and five rebounds. He has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Champ Simpson, who scored 16 points along with two blocks.
Meanwhile, Monroe unfortunately witnessed the end of their 12-game winning streak on Tuesday. They took a 57-48 hit to the loss column at the hands of Westover. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Monroe has scored all season.
Carver pushed their record up to 16-0 with that victory, which was their ninth straight at home. As for Monroe, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-3.
Carver came up short against Monroe in their previous matchup back in February of 2023, falling 60-49. Can Carver avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
