The Cochranton Cardinals were the 53-37 winner over the Union City Bears when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Cochranton fell just short of Union City by a score of 47-45.
Cochranton's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Marley Rodax, who scored 13 points along with five rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Eve Pfeiffer, who scored 13 points along with six rebounds.
Even though they lost, Cochranton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Union City's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ava Greer led the charge by scoring eight points along with six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Cathryn Reynolds, who scored 13 points along with six rebounds.
Cochranton's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 8-9. As for Union City, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-9.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cochranton will square off against Rocky Grove at 7:15 p.m. on Monday. Rocky Grove is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak. Union City's road trip will continue as they head out to face Maplewood at 7:30 p.m. on February 1st.
