The Laney Buccaneers are taking a road trip to challenge the Hoggard Vikings at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Laney is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
Laney came out on top against South Brunswick on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run first inning. The Buccaneers won by a run and slipped past the Cougars 5-4. The Buccaneers haven't had any issues with the Cougars recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive victory against them.
Jesse Smith tossed a big game, striking out seven batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Carston Wedemeyer was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Mason Nance also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last contest, Hoggard made sure to put some runs up on the board against Millbrook on Saturday. The Vikings blew past the Wildcats 10-3. While the Vikings didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Hoggard let Preston Smith and Brandon Bush run wild. Smith went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while Bush got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. That's the most runs Smith has posted since back in March of 2025. Colin Kilcommons was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Hoggard always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .528. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Millbrook only posted an OBP of .300.
Laney's record now sits at 7-2. As for Hoggard, their record is now 6-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Laney has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Hoggard struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Laney came out on top in a nail-biter against Hoggard in their previous matchup back in April of 2025, sneaking past 5-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Buccaneers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
