The Velva Aggies will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the St. John Woodchucks at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Velva is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
Velva pushed their score all the way to 56 last Saturday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They lost to Garrison on the road by a decisive 72-56 margin.
Meanwhile, St. John sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 50-48 victory over Benson County [Leeds/Maddock] last Tuesday.
St. John's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Aston Parisien, who scored 14 points along with three steals. Parisien is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Simon LaRocque, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Velva's loss dropped their record down to 0-3. As for St. John, their win bumped their record up to 2-3.
Velva was able to grind out a solid win over St. John in their previous matchup back in December of 2022, winning 74-67. Does Velva have another victory up their sleeve, or will St. John turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
