Southwest SD is 1-9 against Mar Vista since May of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Raiders will venture away from home to face off against the Mariners at 3:30 p.m. Southwest SD is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Chula Vista hit Southwest SD with a four-run third inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Raiders lost 7-1 to the Spartans. Surprisingly, this marked the Raiders' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.
Southwest SD saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Anthony Bejarano, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Mar Vista won against Chula Vista on Thursday with 18 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Monday. The Mariners put the hurt on Castle Park with a sharp 18-0 win. The contest marked the Mariners' most dominant victory of the season.
Anthony Sanchez made a splash while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Mar Vista is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 11-12 otherwise. Sanchez was also big at the plate, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Those two runs gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Daniel Snow and Jayden Tillman did most of the damage at the plate: Snow got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base, while Tillman got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and one RBI. Tillman is becoming a predictor of Mar Vista's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 10-13 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Aden Duran, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Mar Vista always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .641. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Mar Vista has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-13 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.8 runs over those games. As for Southwest SD, their loss dropped their record down to 13-11-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Southwest SD has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mar Vista struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
