After a string of three wins, The Athens Warriors''s good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They took a 28-21 hit to the loss column at the hands of Maroa-Forsyth. Athens lost against Maroa-Forsyth in their previous head to head back in October of 2022, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 38-36 score last time.
Kaiden Maurer continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Maroa-Forsyth, rushing for 109 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 carries, while also throwing for 200 yards and two touchdowns on only 19 passes. Maurer was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 68 yards. Maroa-Forsyth also got help from Grant Smith who showed off his sure hands for 81 receiving yards.
Athens' loss dropped their record down to 7-2. As for Maroa-Forsyth, their victory was their seventh straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 9-0.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens will take on Southwestern at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Southwestern will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings (they are ranked 327th, while Athens is ranked 110th). As for Maroa-Forsyth, they will look to defend their home field on October 28th against Chicago Christian at 7:00 p.m. Chicago Christian will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
