Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only the Sumner Stingrays walked away with it. They secured a 33-28 W over Riverview on Friday. Winning may never get old, but Sumner sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.
Sumner's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Greg Smith III, who threw for 161 yards and three touchdowns on only 15 passes, and also punched in a rushing score. Another player making a difference was Tyler Williams, who picked up 62 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Riverview's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performance. Perhaps the best among them was Dontarious "Rico" Shoats, who rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown. Aaron Turner also helped with two touchdowns in total.
Sumner's win was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-1. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-9 Jefferson and 1-9 Lennard (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 37.7% over those games). As for Riverview, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-4.
Sumner will be playing at home against Durant at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Riverview does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
