Basketball Game Preview: Helix Highlanders vs. Steele Canyon Cougars

Helix is 7-0 against Steele Canyon since January of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Helix Highlanders will face off against the Steele Canyon Cougars at 5:30 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Helix will head into Monday's game on the come-up: they were handed a heart-breaking three-point loss in their last matchup, but they sure didn't let that happen against Fallbrook on Monday. Helix put the hurt on Fallbrook with a sharp 63-40 victory. The Highlanders have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six contests by 23 points or more this season.

Helix can attribute much of their success to Cheyenne McMillan, who posted 22 points along with four steals and three blocks, and Michaelle Whyte, who went 7 for 15 on her way to 18 points in addition to eight assists and seven steals. With that strong performance, McMillan is now averaging an impressive 15.1 points per game. Another player making a difference was Jordyn McMillan, who put up nine points in addition to eight rebounds and three blocks.

Helix smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in seven consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, Steele Canyon had to endure a seven-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They strolled past El Cajon Valley with points to spare on Wednesday, taking the game 47-33.

Steele Canyon's win ended a six-game drought at home and bumped them up to 8-14. As for Helix, they now have a winning record of 9-8.

Helix didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Steele Canyon in their previous meeting back in December of 2022, but they still walked away with a 40-35 victory. Will Helix repeat their success, or does Steele Canyon have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
