Charlotte Catholic put the hurt on Independence with a sharp 13-3 victory. The win continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Patriots: they've now won eight in a row.
Charlotte Catholic got a great performance from Jack Durham as he pitched 4.1 innings while giving up three earned runs off four hits.
On the hitting side, Cooper Gornet was incredible, scoring three runs while going 3-for-4. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in May of 2024. Caden O'Neill also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Charlotte Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .533. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Independence only posted an OBP of .333.
Meanwhile, South Mecklenburg got themselves on the board against Berry on Friday, but Berry never followed suit. Everything went their way against the Cardinals as they made off with a 15-0 victory. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Sabres considering their two-run performance the match before.
Gabe Luke-Judy looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
At the plate, Andrew Gerow was a standout: he scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-1. Jack Devitt was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
South Mecklenburg has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-4 record this season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 9.5 hits in those games compared to only five in the others. Charlotte Catholic's record is now 6-1.
Saturday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Charlotte Catholic has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .466. However, it's not like South Mecklenburg struggles in that department as they've averaged .488. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
