Xavier Salas and Matthew Martinez were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, Salas tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Meanwhile, Martinez tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Salas also tossed a walk, which is notable because Chavez is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 3-8 otherwise. At the plate, Salas went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs, while Martinez went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Those three runs gave Salas a new career-high.
In other batting news, Nathen Ontiveros and Joey Uribe did most of the damage at the plate: Ontiveros got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Uribe went 4-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Chavez is undefeated when Uribe posts two or more runs, but 2-9 otherwise. Daniel Zelaya was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Chavez kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.3 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 10.2.
Van Nuys came out on top against Valley Academy of Arts & Sciences last Wednesday thanks in part to the team's impressive nine-run second inning. The Wolves blew past the Vipers 15-3. Considering the Wolves have won three matchups by more than 11 runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
James Olan made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run.
In other pitching news, Ricky Lomeli looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Kevin Mata was a standout: he got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Alejandro Diaz, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Chavez's victory bumped their record up to 5-9. As for Van Nuys, the win got them back to even at 4-4.
