The Westchester Comets had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 48 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. They walked away with a 42-29 victory over Long Beach Poly. That's another feather in the cap for Westchester, who also won these teams' last head-to-head.
Westchester's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Mariah Blake led the charge by scoring 14 points along with nine rebounds and two blocks. Blake hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for five straight games. Another player making a difference was Savannah Myles, who scored eight points.
Despite the loss, Long Beach Poly still got an impressive performance from Brooklyn Taylor, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 16 rebounds. Taylor hasn't dropped below two blocks for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Bailey Prewitt, who scored no points along with 22 rebounds and two blocks.
Westchester's win bumped their record up to 13-4. As for Long Beach Poly, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-7.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Westchester will take on Fairfax at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Fairfax will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 653rd, while Westchester is ranked 65th). As for Long Beach Poly, they will head out on the road to take on Lakewood at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
