Basketball Recap: El Capitan Piles Up the Points Against Steele Canyon

El Capitan had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.7 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Tuesday. They breezed past the Steele Canyon Cougars to the tune of 68-23. The Vaqueros have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten games by 21 points or more this season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead El Capitan to victory, but perhaps none more so than Emily Sample, who posted 12 points in addition to seven rebounds and six assists. That's the most points Sample has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Lilly Williams, who almost dropped a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.

El Capitan's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 23-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.5 points over those games. As for Steele Canyon, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost 11 of their last 13 contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 9-18 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. El Capitan will take on Grossmont at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Grossmont will roll in looking for their ninth straight victory, something El Capitan surely won't give up without a fight. As for Steele Canyon, they will head out to take on Helix at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
