Basketball Recap: Cannon Comes Up Short in High-Profile Game with Montverde Academy

Cannon is ranked highly in their home state and on Monday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of Montverde Academy. The Cannon Cougars came up short against the Montverde Academy Eagles, falling 65-45. The matchup marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

When it comes to explaining why Cannon lost, don't look at Jakaila Gaskin. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 14 points and 17 boards. The dominant performance gave Gaskin a new career-high in rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Khloe Thompson, who posted 15 points.

Even though they lost, Cannon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

Saniyah Hall continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Montverde Academy, putting up 24 points along with six boards and four steals. The matchup was Hall's fourth in a row with at least ten points. Lourdes Da Silva Costa was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on ten points and nine rebounds.

The loss snapped Cannon's winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 17-6 record. As for Montverde Academy, the win was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 16-1.

Cannon won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Charlotte Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Cannon is facing Charlotte Christian at the right time seeing as Charlotte Christian is stuck on an eight-game losing streak. As for Montverde Academy, they will square off against Legion Preparatory Academy at 9:00 p.m. on Friday. Legion Preparatory Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 72.4 points per game this season.
