Wood is 10-0 against the Falcons since February of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Wednesday. The Wood Wildcats will be playing at home against the Fairfield Falcons at 7:30 p.m. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, Wood took their contest on the road with ease, bagging a 79-19 victory over the Royals. With that win, Wood brought their scoring average up to 51 points per game.
Wood's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Natalia Sanchez, who scored 22 points along with eight assists and six rebounds. It was the first time this season that Sanchez posted eight or more assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Andrea Howard, who almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine steals.
Even though Fairfield has not done well against the Mustangs recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Fairfield came out on top in a nail-biter against the Mustangs and snuck past 38-36. The win was just what Fairfield needed coming off of a 80-29 defeat in their prior match.
Fairfield got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Mariah Giron out in front who scored 14 points along with five steals. Another player making a difference was Mayana Williams, who scored five points along with 11 rebounds and four steals.
Wood is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 15-11 record this season. As for Fairfield, their victory bumped their record up to 16-10.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Wood have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 32 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Fairfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Wood strolled past the Falcons when the teams last played last Wednesday by a score of 49-33. Will Wood repeat their success, or do the Falcons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
