Even though the Thousand Oaks Lancers have not done well against the Newbury Park Panthers recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Thousand Oaks slipped by Newbury Park 49-48. The win was all the more spectacular given Thousand Oaks' disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 430th, while Newbury Park is ranked 135th).
Thousand Oaks' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Amanda Wang, who scored eight points along with two steals. Jaelah Brown was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with seven rebounds.
Despite the loss, Newbury Park still got an impressive performance from Kierabella Coletta-Todd, who scored 17 points along with four steals and two blocks. Coletta-Todd has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kai Mekari, who scored nine points along with two steals.
The win makes it two in a row for Thousand Oaks and bumps their season record up to 10-12. As for Newbury Park, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 20-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Thousand Oaks will challenge Calabasas at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Calabasas focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Friday. As for Newbury Park, they will head out on the road to face off against Oaks Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
