The Richwood Lumberjacks's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their tenth straight defeat. They took a hard 55-37 fall against Gilmer County. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Richwood of the 60-45 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January.
Despite the loss, Richwood saw an underclassman step up: Christian Griffith scored 12 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Griffith has scored all season. Grant Russell was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Gilmer County was led to victory by Zachariah Wine and Tyler Bush. Wine scored 15 points along with six rebounds and two steals, while Bush scored 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals. It was the first time this season that Wine scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Jacob Mick, who scored nine points along with six rebounds and five assists.
Richwood dropped their record down to 1-15 with that defeat, which was their 12th straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Gilmer County, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-13.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Richwood will take on Highland at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Richwood is not getting complacent, as they presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Highland in their respective states (Richwood is ranked 123rd in West Virginia, while Highland is ranked 376th in Virginia). As for Gilmer County, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Clay County at 7:45 p.m. on February 6th. Hopefully Gilmer County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Monday.
