The Englewood Pirates will head out to challenge the Mullen Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Englewood lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Alameda, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Thursday's contest. Englewood blew past Alameda 18-8 on Thursday. The result was nothing new for Englewood, who have now won six games by ten runs or more so far this season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Mullen, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They came out on top against Kennedy by a score of 16-12 on Thursday. With that victory, the Mustangs brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.
Dani Lechuga was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in August.
In other batting news, Mullen got a massive performance out of Avery Oates, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI. Those three runs gave Oates a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Alena Martinez, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two RBI and one run.
Mullen hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in seven consecutive matchups.
The win made it two in a row for Englewood and bumps their season record up to 8-10. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 8 runs in those games. As for Mullen, the win got them back to even at 10-10.
Englewood suffered a grim 15-1 defeat to Mullen when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Can the Pirates avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
