If the Chula Vista Spartans were feeling good off their 54-15 takedown of the San Ysidro Cougars last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Chula Vista fell 46-39 to Canyon Crest Academy on Monday. If Chula Vista hoped to take revenge for the 45-38 defeat against they when the teams met, then they were left disappointed.
Despite the loss, Chula Vista saw an underclassman step up: Malissa Mckoy scored 18 points along with eight rebounds and six steals. That was a full 46.2% of Chula Vista's points, marking the eighth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ta'mya Lewis, who scored six points along with 12 rebounds and two blocks.
Among those leading the charge was Sofia Colon, who scored 14 points. She continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Han Cheng, who scored eight points.
Chula Vista now has a losing record at 10-11. As for Canyon Crest Academy, they now have a winning record of 8-7.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Chula Vista's road trip will continue as they head out to face Montgomery at 6:30 p.m. on January 24th. Montgomery presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Chula Vista in California (Montgomery is ranked 404th, while Chula Vista is ranked 889th). Canyon Crest Academy won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Rancho Buena Vista at 5:30 p.m. on January 16th.
