Basketball Recap: Mar Vista Comes Up Short

Mar Vista lost against Hilltop back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Mar Vista Mariners were beaten by the Hilltop Lancers 61-33. While losing is never fun, the Mariners can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 654th, while the Lancers are ranked 270th).

Several Mariners players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Anissa Smith, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten boards. With that strong performance, Smith is now averaging an impressive 8.2 rebounds per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Allyson Bell, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Kayli Salgado was her usual excellent self, putting up 30 points for Hilltop. That makes it three consecutive games in which Salgado has scored at least a third of Hilltop's points. Another player making a difference was Mia Franco, who posted nine points.

Mar Vista's defeat was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Hilltop, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-1.

Mar Vista didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 60-26 loss against El Cajon Valley on the 6th. As for Hilltop, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 50-45 win against Rock Academy on the 6th.
