Ranked No. 1 since the beginning of the season,
St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.) moved within one win of completing a wire-to-wire run at the top on a
Brock Porter no-hitter in the Michigan Division 1 semifinals against Forest Hills Northern on Friday.
Porter went the distance against the Huskies, striking out six and walking only two. The St. Mary's Prep defense did not commit an error behind Porter, who faced only one batter over the minimum thanks to a double play in the second.
The no-hitter was the third of the year for Porter, a possible first-round draft pick next month in the Major League Baseball Draft. He no-hit Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills) in six innings on April 12 and Catholic Central (Novi) in seven innings on May 20.
While Porter kept the Huskies off the bases, the Eaglet offense put up nine runs on nine hits. The big blow came in the fourth when
Nolan Schubart belted a grand slam home run. The home run was his team-leading 12th of the season.
St. Mary's Prep (43-0) meets
Grosse Pointe North (Grosse Pointe) tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at Michigan State University in East Lansing for the Division 1 championship. Grosse Pointe North (23-7) defeated Lakeview 8-0 in the other semifinal game. The two teams have not met this year.
The Eaglets began the season at No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 national baseball rankings after winning the Division 2 state championship in 2021 and finishing the year with 22 straight wins. St. Mary's Prep has never dropped from the No. 1 spot and now has 65 consecutive wins entering tomorrow's game.
