The nation's best rushing performance and best passing performance of the week occurred in the same game, when Sandy Creek (Colorado Springs, Colo.) defeated Air Force Academy (US Air Force Academy, Colo.) 68-62.
Daniel Quin of Sand Creek led the ground assault for the winners, as he carried 64 times for a national-best 553 yards and nine touchdowns. The 64 carries is a Colorado state record and it ranks second all-time nationally. The nine touchdowns also tie for second in Colorado history while the 553 yards rank third-best in state history.
Appropriately, Air Force Academy led the nation through the air this week, as Adam Brown completed 35 of 54 passes for 589 yards and seven touchdowns in the loss. The passing yardage is a Colorado state record.
Quin wasn't the only player to score nine touchdowns last week, however. Jordan Wright of Pearl (Miss.) scored nine times in a 69-54 win over Bastrop (La.). The nine touchdowns tied a state record, according to the
Clarion Ledger. He also gained 422 yards on 42 carries.
Marcus Lester of Chavez Academy (Detroit) fell just short of a state record for most passing attempts in one game. His 72 attempts are two short of the record of 74, set by Jimmy Osga of Grayling in 2008.
Cesar Quintana of Estancia also has set a New Mexico state record for rushing yards in a game. His 504 yards breaks the previous record of 446 set by Greg Lucero of Bernalillo in 2006.
Finally, it might seem unfathomable that a player could gain over 430 all-purpose yards and yet never get tackled, but that's exactly what Greg Johnson of Hawkins (Los Angeles) did in a 74-0 win over Jordan. According to his coach Milvon James, Johnson carried the ball five times and rushed for 368 yards and four touchdowns. He also had a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown.
