A trio of pitchers head the list of MVPs on the MaxPreps California All-State Teams. Henry Owens of Edison (Huntington Beach) is the overall MVP while Troy Conyers of El Capitan (Lakeside) is the medium schools MVP and Tyler Wells of Maxwell is the small schools MVP.

Owens won a bevy of awards this spring after posting a 12-1 record and leading Edison to a No. 1 ranking throughout much of the season. He was the Southern Section Division I Player of the Year and the top player in the southland, as chosen by the Los Angeles Times. He also went to the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft.
Conyers, meanwhile, was a force on the mound and at the plate while leading El Capitan to the San Diego Section Division III championship game. Besides batting .408 with 17 doubles and seven home runs, Conyers also had seven mound wins and 85 strikeouts with a 0.21 ERA. He was named the San Diego Section Player of the Year.
Wells led Maxwell to a 30-0 record and a Northern Section championship. He set several state records, including RBIs in a season (78) and consecutive wins (35). He batted .631 with 18 doubles and 14 home runs and also was 12-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 121 strikeouts. Wells was named the Northern Section Most Valuable Player.
Coach of the Year honors for California go to Buchanan's Tom Donald, who led the Bears to the Central Section Division I championship and a 30-2 overall record. Buchanan finished the year ranked
No. 1 in the state by the MaxPreps Freeman Computer Ratings and
No. 2 in the nation by the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 rankings. Buchanan defeated Centennial (Bakersfield) 9-3 in the championship game.
A 60 member overall all-state baseball team was chosen by the MaxPreps staff along with a 30-member medium schools team and a 30-member small schools team.
